How Emotional Regulation Can Improve Your Results With Coaching

Ali Novitsky, MD

As I get ready to deliver my talk, “Walking on Solid Ground through Emotional Regulation”, at the Women Physician Wellness conference in Grand Cayman, I have tremendous gratitude for what I get to do every day.

For the past 5 years, I have used exercise in my coaching programs for many reasons. Yes, it is to strengthen the body, but it is also a very powerful grounding technique. In fact, I personally start all of my coaching sessions with movement before we get into the cognitive side of things.

What I found through this method is that we are able to take our clients to a lower stress level with more emotional regulation. So, they are better able to access powerful thoughts that will serve them.

While I love to use exercise for this grounding purpose, there are many other techniques that can help achieve a similar effect. And, I use many of these as well. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique is just one other example: 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.

We can change our thoughts all day long, but if we are not emotionally regulated… this is going to be much more difficult. Imagine trying to park a car doing 100 miles per hour. This is what we are doing when we try to manage our thoughts without regulating ourselves.

Start to explore what helps you to feel the most grounded and regulated. Add this into your daily routine, even if it is just a 2 minute commitment. Start small, build when you see the benefit that emotional regulation brings.

Sending you lots of grounding energy this week.
